New FDA rules require nutrition labels to show how much sugar was added

FDA 2016 Nutrition Facts Label Changes
Nutrition facts labeling will now contain a new category called “Added Sugars” that’s supposed to better portray reality, the government announced. That way, you’ll know exactly how much extra sugar was added to any type of food or beverage. But that's not the only change you can expect from the upcoming new nutrition label requirements.

More Than Half of All Calories Eaten in America Now Come from Processed Food

Americans are used to breaking down their foods into different groups—and to plenty of different opinions about just what that breakdown should look like. But there’s another category of food we haven’t been tracking, one that now makes up more than half of everything we eat.

What Happens When You Put Marshmallows in a Vacuum

What Happens When You Put Marshmallows in a Vacuum

Play with your food. That’s the moral of the story from Crazy Russian Hacker. He put marshmallows in one of those vacuum food containers, pumped out the air, and watched the squishy little white puffs balloon into ginormous monsters. It’s all silly fun.

Diabetes Obesity Cure Sugar Fat

Losing weight and staying fit might be on your to-do list this year, and this time you might actually do it through a rigorous routine of eating healthy and getting regular exercise. But in the future you may not have watch what you eat as much, as researchers are studying ways to prevent excess sugar from turning into fat.

Seeing sugar get swallowed by a cappuccino is so completely satisfying

This video is titled ‘Granular Satisfaction’ and there’s really no better way to explain it. A mound of sugar disappearing into the vortex that is a cappuccino is so satisfying. You wait and wait and wait for it to happen and then it does and the black hole closes up and waits for its next grain victim.

Burning artificial sweeteners releases some bizarre shooting webs

Burning artificial sweeteners releases some bizarre shooting webs

Our favorite destroyer of objects, the red hot nickel ball, is back. This time it's torching artificial sweeteners like Splenda, Sweet N' Low and Truvia. Splenda and Sweet N' Low put up honorable fights but essentially caramelizes. Truvia, however, starts shooting out these weird spider web looking things when burned.

What Are Artificial Sweeteners Really Doing to Our Bodies?

What Are Artificial Sweeteners Really Doing to Our Bodies?

They're what stimulate your sweet tooth without adding girth to your waistline; they give diet colas and sugar-free snacks a saccharine kick without the consequences. At least that's the idea. But these sweeteners have been the subject of hoaxes and misinformation for years, slowly discrediting their wondrous health claims. Can you really, as Dr. Susan Swithers of Purdue University quips, "have your fake cake and eat it, too?"

Boiling Coca-Cola turns the soda into this gross black goopy tar

Boiling Coca-Cola turns the soda into this gross black goopy tar

The delicious diabetes drink commonly known as soda is a true scientific wonder. We know it's crap but we love it anyway. CrazyRussianHacker wanted to show just how much crap (and sugar) is in one bottle of Coke so he boiled out all the water in the soda to see what was leftover. The refreshing soda becomes this gross, black, gunky tar-like substance that doesn't look edible. Cool.

3D Systems Launches The ChefJet, A Sugar Printer For Cooks

Screen Shot 2014-01-08 at 9.40.55 AM

Sugar printing has always been difficult. Cooks were able to create sugar-based sculptures by hacking standard plastic printers but, in the end, the results have been, shall we say, less than sweet. Thankfully 3D Systems just launched the ChefJet line of 3D printers that can squirt out monochrome and full-color sugar sculptures.

The monochrome new printer will be in the sub-$5,000 range and be available later in 2014. There will be two models, the ChefJet 3D and the ChefJet Pro 3D. The Pro model is a full-color printer with a build volume 10x14x8 inches.

The standard model has a build volume of 8x8x6 inches.

The printers include a digital cookbook for so chefs can print crazy sugar objects without a degree in CAD/CAM modeling. 3D Systems recently purchased 3D sugar printing company Sugar Labs in August.
