Horizon Zero Dawn review: Pushing open world gaming to a whole new level

Horizon Zero Dawn review

Aloy isn’t supposed to venture into the ruins of Devil’s Thirst. In fact, no members of the Nora tribe are meant to set foot in the ruins, but two braves wandered in anyway, so it’s up to Aloy, a young woman who had been an outcast from the tribe until just days ago, to bring them back unscathed.

Against her better judgment, she makes her way into forbidden territory. Once there, she activates her Focus to scan the area for signs of the missing braves and follows the tracks she finds deep into the ruins, where two fearsome, aggressive Sawtooths have forced the braves into hiding on the second floor of a derelict building.

Aloy does her best to stay hidden in the tall grass on the other side of the path, but she quickly realizes that the only way to reach the braves is to take out the machines. She sets up a shock wire trap with her Tripcaster to stun one of them and slinks back into the grass, notching an arrow in preparation.

Samsung is making extra-sure the Galaxy S8’s battery won’t explode

Galaxy S8 Battery Rumors

Samsung’s next big thing is just around the corner. Unlike in previous years, the brand new Galaxy flagship's job won’t solely be to fight off Apple’s incoming iPhone. Instead, the Galaxy S8 will also have to regain the trust of customers following the massive Galaxy Note 7 battery scandal.

The Galaxy S8 will have the unfortunate role of being the first phone to launch after the combustible phablet, and Samsung is looking to make sure it won’t run into similar battery problems.

A new report indicates that Samsung is tapping a third battery maker for the Galaxy S8, which is one more step Samsung is taking to ensure the new phone will be safe for consumers.

Sony’s jaw-dropping camera sensor will power iPhones of the future

iPhone 8 camera sensor

Smartphone photography has come a really long way in the last 10 years. But if you thought the selfies are flawless and the innovation is already done, think again.

Sony is demoing a new type of camera sensor which adds more circuitry to pull off a ridiculously cool trick: 1,000 frames-per-second full HD video. In practice, that equates to footage that can be slowed down 64 times, and a solution to the worst problem with smartphone video.

External HDD support finally coming to PS4 in next system software update

PS4 external hard drive support

Back when the PlayStation 4 launched in 2013, critics weren't shy about heaping praise on to Sony's new console, but there were several fundamental issues that needed addressing. The endless list of apps on the home screen was too difficult to navigate, the launch lineup was disappointing and the PS4 lacked external hard drive support. The first of those two issues were resolved in the years after launch, but to this day, PS4 owners still have to manually replace the hard drive inside their PS4s if they want to expand their storage.

In 2017, over three years after the console hit store shelves, that's finally going to change.

‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ builds a refreshingly cohesive open world

Horizon Zero Dawn hands-on

Lately, my enthusiasm for open world games has diminished substantially. While I couldn't get enough of Spider-Man 2 or Morrowind in the mid-2000s, I found myself nitpicking the worlds of Grand Theft Auto V and The Witcher 3 in recent years. It wasn't that they were any less impressive or compelling, but I could see the seams. Open worlds were no longer an achievement -- they were a bullet point on the back of the box.

As such, I was cautious about getting too excited over Horizon Zero Dawn. From the moment I laid eyes on it at E3 2015, I knew it had the potential to be special. But it could also be another Far Cry Primal: built on good intentions and forged from the disparate remains of past successes.

After spending a few hours with the game earlier this week, I'm happy to report that Horizon Zero Dawn is not only turning out to be as special as I'd hoped it might be, but that Guerrilla Games has designed one of the most cohesive, coherent and jaw-droppingly attractive open worlds of the current generation.

Up to 10 of Sony’s new speakers can be linked together for a ‘portable party’

unspecified Over the past few years, CES has become one giant A/V club for the folks at Sony. The show has essentially turned into a showcase for the hardware giant’s high-res TVs, headphones and speakers. And this year’s no different. Sony is launching a metric ton of speakers this year, including the SRS-XB40, SRS-XB30, SRS-XB20 and SRS-XB10 (never change with those naming conventions,… Read More

PlayStation Experience 2016 Live Stream

Two years ago, Sony decided that E3 wasn't enough.

Rather than wait a year to showcase its games to the world, the company behind the PlayStation decided to host its own event in Las Vegas — an event that anyone could attend — and thus the annual PlayStation Experience was born.

Two years later, the third PSX, which will run from December 3rd-4th, is about to begin. Although we know the schedule of the two-day event and the panels that will be held, we still don't know what surprises the keynote has in store.
