IDC lowers tablet forecast as it anticipates a larger iPad Pro & more 2-in-1 hybrids

IDC today published an updated forecast for worldwide tablet shipments this year, predicting the segment will experience a “notable slowdown” with both iOS and Android expected to record a year over year decline in growth. While IDC notes that the majority of the 212 million tablets it expects to ship this year will be “pure slate tablets”, it does anticipate growth in the 2-in-1 hybrid tablet/laptop category, of which it’s apparently including the larger 12-inch+ iPad that Apple is expected to introduce later this year:

“Commercial segments will play a crucial role in the future of 2-in-1’s,” said Jean Philippe Bouchard, Research Director, Tablets. “It will take some time but we expect that once IT departments are done evaluating Windows 10 and the awaited iPad Pro, they will start migrating some their portable PC and tablet installed base towards 2-in-1’s, which will accelerate the adoption of the form factor. So far, this category has been the led by Microsoft with its Surface product line. But with the arrival of the iPad Pro, the launch of Windows 10, which is better suited for the 2-in-1 form factor, and the introduction of Intel’s Skylake silicon, we expect a flurry of new devices to launch between now and December 2015.”

IDC seems to be including tablets over 10 inches in the 2-in-1 category, despite no proof that the expected 12-inch+ iPad will include a detachable keyboard beyond aftermarket options like the current iPad lineup. The report predicts the 2-in-1 category will grow to 86.5% to 14.7 million units this year and together with 10-inch+ tablets go from just 18.6% of the tablet market last year to an almost 40% share by 2019.

For this year, IDC predicts Android will hit 139.8 million units for a 66% market share (a -10% year over year shift), while iOS is expected to hit 54 million units for a 25.5% market share (a -14.9% YOY shift) by year’s end. The “Others” category will also move -15.8% year over year, according to IDC, while Windows devices, with 17.7 million units shipped and 8.4% market share, will grow 59.5% year over year. And here’s their outlook going into 2019:

Despite the overall drop in the tablet market, Tim Cook has addressed concerns over declining iPad sales in recent months reassuring investors that he’s “bullish about the future of the tablet market”. During the company’s recent fiscal Q3 2015 earnings call, for instance, Cook noted that the company’s partnership with IBM is one catalyst for growth for iPad in the enterprise and that more than 50% of the iPads are still selling to someone who is a first time tablet buyer.

Cook also commented on the market outside of the US, pointing out that “In the BRIC countries, iPad did extremely well. The growth was very high. China it was in the 50’s, the middle east it was in the 60’s. In the developed countries like the US, the market is clearly weaker there…” A new larger iPad Pro expected later this year (something Cook of course can’t talk about yet) could also be another big reason Cook is optimistic about the category.

Apple enters top 5 PC vendors worldwide by shipments, takes third domestically

New IDC numbers released today reveal that Apple has jumped into the top five PC vendors worldwide by shipment this quarter, with Mac shipments coming in at 4.9 million units for 6.3% market share. That’s a year-over-year growth of just under 9%. Lenovo and HP held the top two slots with 20% and 18.8% respectively.

unitedstatesThe same report indicated that the Cupertino company had held steady in third place for domestic shipments. With 2.26 million Macs shipped within the United States, the company was able to grab 13% marketshare. The domestic year-over-year growth came out to 9.3%. Apple was beat out by Dell with a 24% share, while HP held the top position with 27.%.

Apple will be announcing several new products next week, including new iMacs, which should provide a boost for Q4 shipments.

Android gains marketshare from iOS in Q2 as 60% of its shipments hit under $200 off-contract

IDC released its second quarter report for worldwide smartphone shipments by operating system today and in it noted iOS and Android accounted for 96% of the global market. That number, however, comes only as Android grew on the strength of higher sales of low-cost devices abroad.

The dominant smartphone operating systems (OS), Android and iOS, saw their combined market share swell to 96.4% for the quarter, leaving little space for competitors. Android was the primary driver with its vendor partners shipping a total of 255.3 million Android-based smartphones in 2Q14, up 33.3% year over year. Meanwhile, iOS saw its market share decline despite posting 12.7% year-over-year shipment growth. While Android and iOS both realized gains from a year ago, the rest of the market recorded losses.

Of that 96%, the numbers show Android smartphones collectively grabbed 84.7% of the market with its 255.3 million units shipped, while Apple comes in at 11.7% of the market with 35.2 million units shipped during the quarter. That’s down from 13% last year despite growth in overall shipments for Apple and up from 79.6% last year for Android.

Perhaps most interesting in the report is that during the quarter that ended in June IDC says “58.6% of all Android smartphone shipments worldwide cost less than $200 off contract, making them very attractive compared to other devices.” Compare that to Apple (which dropped in marketshare while Android grew) with only 15.4% of its shipments in the $200-$400 mid-range category. The remainder of Android’s sales include 21.5% in the mid-range $200-$400 category and 19.82% in the high-end $400+ category:

IDC previously released its data for worldwide smartphone shipments for Q2 by OEM with Apple coming in with 11.9% of the market behind Samsung at 25.2%.

Apple maintains lead over Samsung as top tablet vendor in Q2 as both lose share to others

With Apple’s Q3 earnings call this week revealing iPad sales of 13.3 million units for the quarter and Tim Cook making a point of defending the category, today we get a look at how Apple is doing overall with IDC’s latest numbers for worldwide tablet shipments.

While noting that tablet shipments worldwide grew 11% year-over-year, IDC’s numbers show that Apple was able to maintain its lead over Samsung with 26.9% of the market (down from 33% last year) compared to Samsung at 17.2% down from 18.8% the year before. Both lose share to other companies as the category reportedly experienced a lot of growth among smaller companies like Lenovo and Acer while the “others” category grew from 37% to 44% marketshare:

Despite declining shipments of its iPad product line, Apple managed to maintain its lead in the worldwide tablet market, shipping 13.3 million units in the second quarter. Following a strong first quarter, Samsung struggled to maintain its momentum and saw its market share slip to 17.2% in the second quarter. Lenovo continued to climb the rankings ladder, surpassing ASUS and moving into the third spot in the tablet market, shipping 2.4 million units and grabbing 4.9% markets share. The top 5 was rounded out by ASUS and Acer, with 4.6% and 2.0% share, respectively. Share outside the top 5 grew to an all time high as more and more vendors have made inroads in the tablet space. By now most traditional PC and phone vendors have at least one tablet model in the market, and strategies to move bundled devices and promotional offerings have slowly gained momentum.

During its earnings call earlier this week, Tim Cook addressed comments regarding weaker than usual growth of iPad sales pointing out that the company is experiencing increasing growth internationally while the US market slows. He also noted possibilities for growth in the enterprise that could come of Apple’s new partnership with IBM. “When we dig into it though our market share in the commercial sector in the US is good, it’s 76%, the penetration in business is low, it’s only 20. If you looked at the penetration of notebooks in business it would be over 60. We think there is a substantial upside in business…The market is bifurcated on iPad. In the BRIC countries, iPad did extremely well. The growth was very high. China it was in the 50’s, the middle east it was in the 60’s. In the developed countries like the US, the market is clearly weaker there…”

IDC notes that “total tablet market includes slate tablets plus 2-in-1 tablets,” but it didn’t say exactly what tablets from what companies it’s including in the others category. As always the report includes numbers for tablet shipments, while Apple’s figure of 13.3 million represents tablets sold.

Apple drops to 32% tablet market share in Q2 amidst strong YoY Android growth

IDC is out today with its latest report tracking worldwide tablet shipments, reporting that total shipments have experienced a sequential decline during Q2 at the expense of Apple and the iPad. Apple already announced that it had sold 14.6 million iPads during the quarter, a significant drop from the 17 million it sold in the year ago quarter, but today IDC gives us some insight into where that puts Apple in its lead over Samsung as the top tablet vendor.

Apple was able to pick up 32.4% of the market during Q2, continuing its lead as the top tablet manufacturer, but dropping from the 60.3% of the market it had in Q2 last year. While Apple’s tablet shipments are clearly suffering from lack of new product announcements this year, it’s also losing share to Samsung and others. IDC reports 277% year over year growth for Samsung, giving it 18% of the market with 8.1 million units shipped during Q2. All of the top 3 vendors– Apple, Samsung, and ASUS– experienced a drop compared to Q1 2013, but the Android tablet makers have experienced significant growth compared to Apple since last year.

IDC-tablet-market-Q2-2013-02Now, Apple is expected to launch new tablet products in the second half of the year, a move that better positions it to compete during the holiday season. Meanwhile, the other two vendors in the top 3 also saw a decline in their unit shipments during the quarter. Second-place Samsung shipped 8.1 million units, down from 8.6 million in the first quarter of 2013, although up significantly from the 2.1 million units shipped in 2Q12. And third-place ASUS shipped a total of 2.0 million units in 2Q13, down from 2.6 million in 1Q13.

While total shipments dropped -9.7% over Q1 2013, IDC notes that 45.1 million total units shipped is actually up 59.6% from Q2 last year, thanks largely to growth from Samsung followed by Asus, Lenovo, and Acer.

Not all vendors experienced a slowdown during the quarter. PC stalwarts Lenovo and Acer both re-entered the top five this quarter. Lenovo continued to make headway into the world of mobility and for the first time had shipments surpass the million unit mark in a quarter, shipping a total of 1.5 million devices. This was up 313.9% from a year ago and enough to capture 3.3% market share. Rounding out the top 5 was Acer, which shipped 1.4 million tablets in 2Q13 for 247.9% year-over-year growth and an increase of 35.4% over the first quarter of 2013.

As always, IDC’s numbers reflect shipments of branded tablets, not sales, and “exclude OEM sales for all vendors.”

IDC: iOS and Android accounted for 92.3% of smartphone shipments in Q1, iPhone fell to just 17%

Research firm IDC is out with its latest numbers for Q1 2013 today tracking worldwide smartphone shipments by OS and OEM noting Android and iOS combined accounted for 92.3% of all shipments during the quarter.

IDC noted that Apple and Android  shipments combined increased year over year approximately 59.1% with a total of 199.5 million units shipped worldwide during Q1. That’s up from just 125.4 million a year ago. Apple is clearly a large driver of the growth with the report pointing out that iPhone had its “largest ever first quarter volume.” However, despite that, Apple also saw a decline among usage of iOS compared to growth of the industry as a whole, allowing Android to keep its top spot by OS and Samsung to remain number 1 by OEM.

How far is iOS behind Android? According to IDC it accounted for 17.3% of the market in Q1 compared to 75% for Android. Of course this is likely taking shipments (not sales) into account and also doesn’t represent tablet usage that we know iOS continues to dominate. 

Microsoft was able to surpass BlackBerry during the quarter to take third place with Windows Phone growing 133.3% year over year and capturing 3% of shipments (thanks to Nokia) compared to 6.3% for BlackBerry OS. IDC does note, however, that BlackBerry ” shipped more than a million units running on its new BB10 platform.”

As always, IDC doesn’t provided data showing shipped vs sold figures.

IDC: iPad drops below Android with 40% share of worldwide tablet market, Apple still top vendor

Research firm IDC is out today with preliminary data from its quarterly study tracking worldwide tablet market share putting Apple at 40% market share compared to Android’s 56.5% of the market in Q1 2013. In the year ago quarter, Apple held 58.1% of the market surpassing Android’s 39.4%. IDC says Android shipments were increased thanks to strong growth of Samsung’s smaller sized tablets, while ASUS moved into the number 3 spot with 350.0% year over year growth due to strong demand for the Nexus 7:

ASUS managed to move into the number 3 vendor spot as it continued to see decent tablet shipment demand from the highly marketed Nexus 7 device. But, with Google’s I/O conference right around the corner and expectations of an imminent device refresh, the company will need to find a way to sustain its momentum. Amazon fell to the number 4 position, once again the victim of a highly seasonal product cycle.

Despite Apple taking number two behind Android for tablet shipments by operating system, it remains the top vendor by OEM taking a 39.6% share of the market vs Samsung’s 17.9% and 5.5% for ASUS. IDC notes that Apple actually exceeded expectations for Q1, where it typically experiences a drop off in shipments, by selling 19.5 million units compared to a forecast of 18.7 million:

The company, which historically has experienced a steep drop off in first quarter shipments (following strong holiday sales in the fourth quarter), saw some smoothing of that seasonality this year. Number two vendor Samsung also performed above expectations and managed to grow its shipments over the fourth quarter as more of the company’s smaller-sized tablets began to gain traction in the market. Samsung has also used its recent Android smartphone growth to help bring its tablet product line into new markets and channels, leveraging the opportunity to package and bundle. The strong performance of the two market leaders helped drive total shipments to an impressive 49.2 million units for the quarter.

As we often warn with these kind of reports, shipments include “shipments to distribution channels or end users,” so it’s not necessarily an accurate representation of sales to customers as not all vendors provide that information.

IDC estimates Android will pass Apple for worldwide tablet market share in 2013 on the back of smaller/cheaper tablets

Research firm IDC is out with an updated 2013 forecast for worldwide tablet shipments today and, on top of increasing its prediction from 172.4 million units to 190.9 million for the year, claimed Android tablets would continue to grow and cut into Apple’s market share. IDC said Android will capture 48.8-percent of the tablet market by operating system by the end of the year, while Apple is estimated to take home 46 percent. That’s down from 51 percent of the market for Apple in 2012 and just 41.5-percent for Android in IDC’s previous forecast. IDC estimated tablets in the 8 inches and below category will continue to grow and expects Windows tablets to increase from 1 percent to 7.4-percent by 2017 at the expense of iOS and Android:

“One in every two tablets shipped this quarter was below 8 inches in screen size. And in terms of shipments, we expect smaller tablets to continue growing in 2013 and beyond” said Jitesh Ubrani, Research Analyst for IDC’s Tablet Tracker. “Vendors are moving quickly to compete in this space as consumers realize that these small devices are often more ideal than larger tablets for their daily consumption habits.”

Android’s gains come at the expense of Apple’s iOS, which is expected to slip from 51% of the market in 2012 to 46% in 2013. Longer term, both iOS and Android will eventually relinquish some market share to Windows-based tablets, with Windows 8 predicted to grow from 1% of the market in 2012 to 7.4% in 2017. IDC expects Windows RT growth to remain below 3% during the forecast period.

Report: Even iPhone 4S outsells Galaxy S3 in Q4 as iPhone 5 becomes best selling smartphone in the world

While Apple was able to pass Samsung for the first time to become the No. 1 mobile phone vendor in the U.S. recently, Strategy Analytics latest numbers showed Samsung still dominated among global smartphone shipments in Q4. The research firm is out with a new report today that breaks down global smartphone sales by model, and, not so surprisingly, Apple’s iPhone 5 was able to take the top spot from Samsung’s Galaxy S3 to become the world’s best selling smartphone model during the quarter with 27.4 million units shipped:

According to the latest research from our Handset Country Share Tracker (CST) service, Apple’s iPhone 5 overtook Samsung’s Galaxy S3 to become the world’s best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever in the fourth quarter of 2012. Apple’s iPhone 5 smartphone model shipped an estimated 27.4 million units worldwide during the fourth quarter of 2012. The iPhone 5 captured an impressive 13 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally and it has become the world’s best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever. A rich touchscreen design, extensive distribution across dozens of countries, and generous operator subsidies have been among the main causes of the iPhone 5’s success.

Perhaps more surprising is the fact that iPhone 4S, which was discounted at the launch of iPhone 5, is also ahead of the Galaxy S3, as highlighted in the graphic above. The iPhone 4S grabbed the No. 2 position in Strategy Analytics’ study with 17.4 million units sold and 8 percent of the global smartphone market:

In addition to the iPhone 5, Apple shipped an estimated 17.4 million iPhone 4S units for 8 percent smartphone share globally in Q4 2012. Apple’s iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S are currently the world’s two most popular smartphone models.We estimate Samsung’s Galaxy S3 was the world’s third best-selling smartphone model and it shipped 15.4 million units globally, capturing 7 percent share in the fourth quarter of 2012… global demand for the Galaxy S3 appears to have peaked and Samsung will surely be keen to introduce its rumored Galaxy S4 upgrade in the coming weeks to fight back against Apple’s popular iPhone range.
