Apple’s Back to School sale returns to Australia and New Zealand w/ gift card promo

AU Apple Back to Uni

Apple’s annual Back to School sale in Australia and New Zealand has gone live with a promotion for qualifying students to receive Apple Store credit with the purchase of a Mac, iPad, or iPhone. Similar to last year, the Back to School sale includes the usual education pricing on Macs and iPads, but this year Apple is including Apple Store gift cards rather than App Store gift cards like last year.

Included with a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, or Mac Pro is a A$100/NZ$125 gift card while an iPhone 6, 5s, or 5c or iPad Air or iPad Air 2 qualifies for a A$50/NZ$65 gift card. For the smaller iPad mini 2 or iPad mini 3, Apple will include a A$25/NZ$30 gift card.

Apple says current university students or students accepted to a university qualify for the discounts and gift card, while parents of university students and teachers and staff also qualify.

The promotion in Australia and New Zealand is similar to the 2014 Back to School promotion in the United States, which usually kicks off around July. Apple similarly offered Apple Store gift cards rather than App Store gift cards in its United States promotion then.

Sprint targeting T-Mobile customers w/ $200 min. trade-in offer for switchers

iPhone 6

Just one day after T-Mobile unveiled its Smartphone Equality program letting loyal customers avoid credit checks, Sprint has announced a new promotion specifically targeting T-Mobile customers with an offer to make switching carriers easier. Sprint’s latest buyback and trade-in offer joins the carrier’s existing ‘Cut Your Bill in Half’ promo which encourages AT&T and Verizon customers to switch; T-Mobile was notably missing from that offer. Here’s how Sprint details the new promotion for T-Mobile customers:

Starting today, Sprint will guarantee any T-Mobile subscriber at least $200 credit for a currently activated and working T-Mobile smartphone when switching between carriers. The offer requires T-Mobile customers to move their phone number over to Sprint and trade-in a T-Mobile smartphone to a Sprint store to qualify.

Sprint also says switchers can combine the trade-in value with a contract buyout offer of up to $350 per line to cover the cost of switching carriers. The contract buyout offer come sin the form of a prepaid or reward card. Finally, Sprint says the current promotion for T-Mobile subscribers will run starting today through April 9th.

While the promotion doesn’t match the Sprint program targeting AT&T and Verizon subscribers, it does make moving from T-Mobile to Sprint easier.

Sprint, you may recall, pursued plans to acquire T-Mobile during 2014 but ultimately dropped its bid over regulatory concerns and replaced its CEO.

Apple’s annual Back to School promotion likely kicking off at end of June

Retro Apple Store Back to School display

Retro Apple Store Back to School display

Apple could be planning to launch its annual Back to School sales promotion within the next two weeks. Apple Stores, according to several employees, will be changing the front of store glass window displays overnight on June 30th. This is the usual timeframe in which Apple launches a promotion to boost Mac, iPad, and iPhone sales in anticipation of the new school year in the fall.

Last year, the Back to School promotion consisted of $100 App Store gift cards for Mac purchases and $50 cards for iPad and iPhone purchases by students with their Student IDs. Of course, this June 30th window change could be connected to another promotion or a new product, but based on the timing, the Back to School program being in the wings seems most likely.

RadioShack offers $79 iPhone 5s on contract, $30 iPhone 5c, or free with trade-in

radioshack-iPhone-5s-deal

RadioShack is offering one of the best discounts you’ll find on a new iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c on contract. These are in-store prices, but for just $79 (Reg. $199) you’ll be able to get a 16GB iPhone 5s on new or upgraded two-year contract. That includes AT&T, Verizon and Sprint and you can even slash that price further from $79 to $0 by taking advantage of RadioShack’s trade-in offers for the iPhone 4s.

RadioShack is also offering a similar discount on the iPhone 5c. The entry-level 16GB model (Reg. $99) is available for just $29 (or for free with an eligible trade-in). That deal is also available on all three carriers including AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. Both of these deals are approximately $20 under the best deals we see pop up from time to time through various retailers.

The company also noted that it’s knocking $10 off select OtterBox and Mophie cases for those picking up a new iPhone. The deals kick off in RadioShack stores starting today. RadioShack tells me there is no end date set for the promotion, but you can expect the iPhone 5s deal to last until at least June 10. You can find out more about the trade-in details here.

Denise Young Smith expands role to cover all Apple Human Resources, Podolny goes full-time Apple University

Denise-Young-Smith-AppleAccording to a report from Bloomberg, Apple has promoted its Vice President of Global Retail Stores Denise Young Smith to a new position as head of human resources. Smith replaces the old head of human resources, Joel Podolny, who Apple says will now “focus full-time on Apple University.” Interestingly, in Apple’s statement it noted that “Apple University is an increasingly important resource” and that Podolny will focus “full-time on developing and scaling the University.”

Apple provided the comment below to Bloomberg on Smith’s new position, noting the promotion “will expand her role to lead Apple’s worldwide human resources organization.” The full statement from Apple below:

“We are excited that Denise Young Smith will expand her role to lead Apple’s worldwide human resources organization,” Huguet wrote in an e-mail. “Apple University is an increasingly important resource within the company as we continue to grow, so Joel Podolny will be focusing full-time on developing and scaling the University he helped establish.”

Apple confirms Apple Store iPhone trade-in program has launched today

Screen Shot 2013-08-30 at 10.21.24 AM

Photo from trade-in program training

In line with our reports from earlier this week, Apple has announced that its Apple Store iPhone trade-in-program has launched today. The confirmation comes by way of comment to CNBC.

The trade-in-program is officially called the “iPhone Reuse and Recycling Program” and it is available in Apple Stores across the United States. It is powered in-part by BrightStar…

The trade-in process can be conducted on the store floor, or at the Genius Bar. Apple will not be heavily promoting the program with marketing signage (as of now), but Apple Store employees have been instructed to recommend the program to applicable customers.

Apple Store employees will conduct the trade-in process via the mobile EasyPay devices. A customer can bring in an iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5, and receive a gift card to be applied to a new iPhone purchase.

The new iPhone must be purchased during that same transaction and it must be an activated phone on a contract. Apple and BrightStar will create a trade-in-value for the old iPhone based on screen quality, overall hardware quality, button quality, and based off the device having or not having liquid damage.

The traded-in iPhone will be packaged in a plastic bag and shipped to BrightStar for recycling in the United States.

Customers who bring in a damaged iPhone to the Genius Bar may be encouraged to simply trade-up to a new version of the device.

The iPhone trade-in values will consistently fluctuate based on supply and demand, but we’re currently hearing an average of about a $250-$253 value for a 16GB iPhone 5 in good condition. A GSM 8GB iPhone 4 will be worth between $120 and $140, while the CDMA version will be worth around $80.

The iPhone trade-in program is a component of Apple CEO Tim Cook’s new iPhone sales strategy.
