Official ‚Äėsecond screen‚Äô PlayStation PS4 app for iOS and Android announced

playstation-social-second-screen

At Sony’s PS4 keynote, game developer¬†Evolution Studios promised its driving game Drive Club would have a “second screen” option for Android tablets.¬†This would allow gamers to socialize with other players from a tablet, but it was previously unclear if this feature would be compatible with games and devices other than Android tablets.

Just a mere four hours after today’s keynote, Sony has announced a new version of its¬†”PlayStation App”. It is compatible, in addition to Android, with iOS devices. The app will turn tablets and phones into a “second screen” controller. Users will also be able to download games to their PS4 while on the go, so they’ll be ready to play once they arrive home.

It is currently unknown if the app will be similar to Microsoft’s Xbox app that allows users to view the stats of other gamers. Sony has yet to announce a release date, but the console is scheduled to arrive during the 2013 holiday season.

PS4 Second Screens
PS4 integrates second screens, including PlayStation¬ģVita (PS Vita), smartphones and
tablets, to wrap gamers in their favorite content wherever they are. A key feature enabled by
second screens is “Remote Play” and PS4 fully unlocks its potential by making PS Vita the
ultimate companion device. With PS Vita, gamers will be able to seamlessly pull PS4 titles
from their living room TVs and play them on PS Vita’s beautiful 5-inch display and intuitive
dual analog sticks over Wi-Fi networks¬†It is SCEI’s long-term vision is to make most PS4
titles playable on PS Vita.

A new application from SCE called “PlayStation¬ģApp” will enable iPhone, iPad, and
Android based smartphones and tablets to become second screens. Once installed on
these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an
adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the
console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices.

Epic shows us the future of gaming with new Unreal Engine 3 reel [video]

Apple’s unveiling of the new iPad overshadowed plenty of big news on Wednesday, and Epic Games’s unveiling of a brand new Unreal Engine 3 feature reel is something we couldn’t let slip through the cracks. The popular lab took to the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco on Wednesday to show off the latest features of its Unreal Engine 3, the latest version of Epic’s popular platform. Shown in the reel is a small sampling of what developers can accomplish with the latest version of Unreal Engine, and the engine supports game development across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. Game samples for each of the aforementioned platforms are shown off in Epic’s video, which follows below.

PlayStation Vita Review: You Don’t Need Another Beautiful Smart Gadget [Video]

The PSP never exploded. The Nintendo 3DS is a letdown. Now it's 2012, and Sony has the chance for a clean start that'll put console-caliber games in your bag. It does—but does a pocketable console really make sense anymore? More »

Sony PlayStation Vita sales plummet during second week of availability

Sony’s PlayStation Vita portable gaming console launched in Japan with wind in its sails, but the device’s success appears to have been short lived. A recent report from 4Gamer¬†suggests¬†Sony sold just 72,479 units during the week ended December 25th, down from the estimated 324,859 units 4Gamer¬†said Sony sold during the Vita’s first week of availability. Nintendo sold 482,200 3DS units during the same time period and Sony also sold 101,121 units of its older PSP console.¬†Perhaps Sony will need to follow in Nintendo’s footsteps and initiate a price drop to help spur continued sales, and a wider launch ahead of the holiday shopping season surely would have helped the portable console as well. The PlayStation Vita will launch in the United States on February 22nd for $250, and a 3G-enabled version is expected to launch at a later date.
