Apple Watch tour of world’s fashion magazines reaches Hong Kong

east-touch

Apple may be able to scale back its advertising budget for the Apple Watch: so far the device appears to be doing just fine in getting multi-page editorial coverage in the world’s fashion magazines. The latest fashion title to run a major feature on the watch is Hong Kong’s East Touch magazine, which is running a four-page spread.

The Apple Watch has so far been featured Vogue China, Vogue France, the USA’s Self and the UK’s Style, as well as fashion titles in France and Germany. Apple did, however, have to pay for advertising in the US edition of Vogue. A contributing editor to Vogue also described the Apple Watch as “terrific.”

Check out the other photos from East Touch below …

Apple is believed to be planning a presence in major department stores around the world, along with a pop-up store at SXSW.

Apple Watch makes UK fashion magazine debut with three-page feature in Style

IMG_0569

Following from features in fashion magazines in France and Germany, the Apple Watch has made its UK editorial debut in Sunday’s publication of Style. Although the Watch did not make the cover (although the cover does say that it is ‘starring Apple Watch’), it does get three pages of press attention in the middle of the magazine.

The main picture features Guinevere Van Seenus wearing a 38mm Apple Watch Sport with Space Grey case and black sport band. The written accompaniment says that the Apple Watch does not convey ‘power, status and discernment’ like a Rolex can but holds back no punches in saying it will ‘wipe the floor with existing smartwatch manufacturers and give mid-market watchmakers a fright’. The magazine compliments Jony Ive in particular, for the design.

Jony Ive has got the tone of the Apple Watch just right. It looks elegant but not standoffish, and as well as the 18 variations of the regular version, there are the 10 Sport options, which come with a lightweight case, strengthened glass and a rubber strap, plus the more expensive Edition range (six models), made from 18ct gold.

This quote again implies that the only combinations of body and band Apple will offer at launch are those listed on its Gallery page. A selection of additional bands will be available to buy separately.

The double-page spread is accompanied by another single page, pictured above, that is written by ‘technology expert’ David Phelan. It is certainly interesting to see a more technical discussion of the product’s features in a fashion magazine.

Unfortunately, there are no new insights here beyond what is already common knowledge. He does criticise the lack of a camera for potentially missing out on ‘Generation Instagram’ who want to take selfies on their wrist, apparently.

Apple has already announced an event on March 9th, where it will go into more detail about the Apple Watch. Tim Cook has said it is planned to ship to customers in April.

IDG shutters Macworld Magazine, much of the editorial staff let go

9to5-image 2014-09-10 at 2.16.50 PM

International Data Group (IDG) is shutting down Macworld Magazine, the long time Apple periodical according to tweets by staff and conversations I’ve had with personnel.  Dan Miller, Editor, Macworld tweeted the following:
9to5-image 2014-09-10 at 1.41.26 PM

The Macworld.com website will remain open [although as a shell of its former self -ed] with a reduced staff according to Miller, who himself is leaving in a month.

As a former contributor and fan of Macworld.com it is sad to see the publication go. Ironically, the transition from print to digital hastened by Apple’s own iPad and other online tools made the publication one of the last remaining Apple publications in print.

There’s no word yet on the fate of the annual trade show of the same name that has also taken a hit since Apple stopped attending. We’ll update as we hear more.

Update: Dan Miller wrote in to clarify that he never implied that the magazine “would be a shell of its former self”  (even though most of the names and faces that were the backbone of the magazine have been let go).

What if classic paintings were Photoshopped like today’s magazines?

What if classic paintings were Photoshopped like today's magazines?

Lauren Wade at TakePart re-imagined famous classic paintings to fit today's "standards" by Photoshopping the subjects in the paintings to look like magazine cover models. That basically means: impossibly skinny waists, thinner arms, basically no joy of fat whatsoever but still have bigger breasts somehow. It's quite embarrassing to see how starved our definition of beauty is.

Imaginative use of iBeacon gives bar patrons free access to Newsstand magazines

ibeacon

A London-based digital publishing company is trialling use of Apple’s iBeacon technology to provide bar patrons with free access to digital versions of two magazines in Newsstand, reports TechCrunch.

The way it works is that the bar buys a subscription, and one or more iBeacons (each little larger than a quarter) unlock the content for customers within range. On iOS devices, the whole process is completely automatic. Once the customer leaves the location, the content is locked again and becomes available for purchase as normal …

“As this is very much new technology we are showcasing it for the first time at Bar Kick in Shoreditch, London,” Exact Editions‘ Daniel Hodgkin explained about the first real world use of the tech. “When in this bar, the soccer magazine ‘When Saturday Comes’ and the fashion and culture magazine ‘Dazed & Confused will be available.”

The company hopes the trial will prove a win-win: customers get free access to magazines, and some of them will then choose to buy a copy or subscription to have continued access to it after leaving the location.

If you’re not up to speed on iBeacon, check out our briefing. The technology is going to be pretty mainstream by early next year, with the possibility of it becoming a new payment platform later.
