HTC isn’t done making killer smartphones just yet

HTC U11 Plus vs. Pixel 2

HTC just sold a huge chunk of its mobile arm to Google, the team that’s responsible for last year’s Pixel phones and the upcoming Pixel 2 model. However, that doesn’t mean HTC has given up on making HTC-branded smartphones, and a new flagship is just around the corner.

This phone is apparently an iPhone X and Galaxy Note 8 rival and appears to be even more exciting than the Pixel 2 that HTC Is making for Google. It’s also the kind of Pixel 2 XL phone HTC could have built.

A history of HTC in 12 devices

HTC on Friday basically sold a huge portion of itself to Google, which is clearly hoping to use the company’s talent for hardware in its own push for self-branded devices. It’s the end of an era for a major company that has been a friend to Google and Android for a decade — perfect timing for a little retrospective on HTC’s many and varied devices. Read More

Wait, so Google only wants the HTC team that copies iPhones?

Google Pixel 2 Release Date

Just as anticipated, Google and HTC announced a few hours ago that Google is indeed going to buy a part of the struggling Taiwanese company. But while we thought Google will buy the entire mobile division of HTC, that’s not actually what happens. Google is only purchasing a part of the smartphone team, the one that’s responsible for the Pixel-branded iPhone clones.

Google is buying the heart of HTC’s smartphone division for $1.1 billion

Google HTC phone deal

Google and HTC have announced a $1.1 billion cooperation agreement between the two companies, which will send a large part of HTC's smartphone engineering team to Google, in addition to granting the internet giant a license to use HTC's patent portfolio. In return, HTC will get $1.1 billion in cash.

The agreement comes after repeated rumors that Google was leading attempts to buy HTC's smartphone division. This announcement essentially means HTC is selling the Pixel smartphone division to Google, giving it complete control over the manufacture of its Pixel smartphones. In return, HTC gets money to reinvest in its own smartphone, VR, and components divisions.

HTC might (and totally should) sell off its Vive division, and I know who should buy it

htc vive valve acquisition

Now, the company is reportedly considering a move to spin the VR business off into a separate entity that it can sell to the highest bidder. This is seriously fantastic news for early VR adopters, especially if one company in particular decides to throw in a bid.
