HTC Vive’s second E3 finds VR gaining some AAA steam

HTC is back at E3 this year for its sophomore turn at the gaming expo, after its first show in 2016 following closely on the heels of the Vive VR headset’s consumer launch. I spoke to HTC VP of VR Dan O’Brien at this year’s E3, to find out a bit about how the company sees the market, its role therein and the state of VR in general now that it’s not the newest kid on… Read More

HTC told us why the HTC U11 doesn’t have a bezel-less display

HTC U11 Specs

In the early hours of the morning while most people in the United States were sound asleep, HTC unveiled its next-generation flagship smartphone. The HTC U11 made its debut in Taipei, emerging as a solid contender to other 2017 flagship smartphones (at least, on paper, but we'll discuss that in a separate post). The U11 sports a unique design with what HTC refers to as "liquid design language," characterized by smooth lines and mirror-like colored finishes that really catch light in a beautiful way. But not all of the defining elements of HTC's U11 design are so impressive.

In 2017, every major smartphone maker is moving toward a new display design that does away with the large bezels surrounding a phone's screen. LG's G6 achieved a screen-to-body ratio in the high seventies, Samsung managed an 83% screen-to-body ratio on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, and Apple's upcoming iPhone 8 is expected to be even more impressive. But HTC's new U11 sports the same old look we've seen for a decade now. Why isn't HTC on board with this exciting new trend? BGR got the answer straight from the horse's mouth.

HTC U11 hands-on: Taking on the Galaxy S8 in style

HTC U11 Release Date

What will it take to contend with Samsung? The South Korean consumer electronics giant just released its most impressive flagship smartphones ever, featuring power and a design that no other company can match. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ would undoubtedly sell themselves to an extent, but having tremendous carrier support and Samsung's multi-billion dollar marketing budget certainly doesn't hurt. How can any other Android phone vendor hope to compete?

For HTC, the company will look to set its 2017 flagship HTC U11 apart in two ways. The first is with some sleek and unique styling and a design identity unlike anything we've seen from other phone makers. And the second is with a novel new feature called Edge Sense that HTC hopes will be enough to turn some heads in its direction.

HTC’s new Hail Mary: Two U phones with novel ideas

HTC U Ultra and U Play Release Date

HTC made two of the best smartphones money can buy, but the company can’t talk about them. The Pixel and Pixel XL are Google’s phones even if they’re actually made by HTC. Aside from the Pixels, HTC isn’t doing very well in the mobile business, but it’s not ready to throw in the towel. The company came forward with a couple of new phones which have new branding and novel features (for HTC phones).

HTC avoided the early January CES show and didn’t want to wait until late February to unveil the U Ultra and U Play. It announced the pair of phones very early on Thursday in what looks like the company’s latest Hail Mary in the smartphone business

HTC just unveiled one of the best Android phones of 2016, but you can’t have one

HTC 10 Evo Release Date

First, the good news: HTC just unveiled what is easily one of the best new Android smartphones of 2016. The handset, dubbed the HTC 10 evo, features a large 5.5-inch Super LCD 3 display with quad HD resolution and a pixel density of 534 ppi. It sports a 2.0 GHz Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of storage plus microSDXC support. It ships with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, and it packs HTC's latest 16-megapixel camera with phase detection auto focus and optical image stabilization. It's also the first ever all-metal Android phone to feature IP57 water- and dust-resistance.

So, what's the bad news? The odds are pretty good that you'll never be able to buy one.

New numbers home in on Vive sales

htc_vive_at_mwc A brief in 87870 news offers us some interesting news about Vive sales worldwide. Alvin Graylin, China Regional President of VR at HTC, said that the company sold 100,000 units in August, an acceptable if low number for a comparatively expensive consumer electronics product. This month, however, another HTC representative, Cher Wang, said the company sold in excess of 140,000 units, a 40,000… Read More
