Google’s 2016 Nexus smartphones are probably going to be flagship killers

Google Nexus 2016 Snapdragon 821
Google is widely expected to launch two new Nexus smartphones in the coming months, and unlike last year, the 2016 HTC-made devices will be identical when it comes to hardware. What’s more interesting is that both Sailfish and Marlin should be faster than any of the existing flagship Android devices, which isn’t something you could always say about a Nexus-branded smartphone. This year, however, the new Nexus handsets might be real flagship killers, to paraphrase the former motto of a certain smartphone maker, and could offer a better overall performance than the Galaxy S7, HTC 10, LG G5, and most other 2016 flagships from competing phone makers.

HTC’s $179 unlocked handset is hitting the States this month

HTC Desire 530 The HTC Desire 530 is $179 unlocked. That’s the main thing you need to know about it. Everything else about the handset is pretty underwhelming at best – and reviewers haven’t exactly been heaping praise on the thing. But it’s $179 unlocked and it’s arriving this month in the States. The company debuted the phone at Mobile World Congress back in February, leading… Read More

These year’s new Nexus phones could be 2016’s most powerful handsets

2016 Google Nexus HTC Snapdragon 821
A new report last week stated that HTC is working on two new Nexus smartphones that will be released this year. It's OK if you missed it — the report hit while most of the tech world was checking out Apple’s new software goodies. The rumor echoed earlier reports that claimed HTC might make two Nexus devices in 2016, and the new report said that both of these Nexus phones will sport slightly improved processors.

Good VR is great — and bad VR is abysmal

riftred I don’t want VR to be boring. It’s strange to think that something so futuristic and promising, something we’ve looked forward to for decades, could be boring, but I can’t deny it, since I’ve experienced it myself. The fact is that with hundreds of companies joining the VR gold rush, we’re going to be panning a lot of silt for every grain of gold. Read More

HTC’s Mixed Reality demo shows onlookers what it’s like to experience VR

HTC Mixed Reality In these earliest days of commercial viability, virtual reality is running up against the same wall as so many technologies before it: how does a company translate it for the majority of consumers who won’t be able to demo it in the wild? HTC’s mixed reality is an interesting sort of work around, adding augmented reality to the equation, in order to offer a sort of voyeuristic… Read More

HTC launches a $1,200 business edition of the Vive VR Headset

htc_vive_at_mwc Sure, everything will be all fun and games next week at E3, but right now HTC’s talking business. The company’s well-received Vive headset is getting its very own “Business Edition,” the Vive BE, which is targeted at companies interested in harnessing virtual reality for commercial purposes. The hardware, it should be mentioned right off the top, is pretty much the same… Read More

The HTC 10 is now official, which means the last piece of the Android flagship puzzle has fallen into place. HTC 10 review: Ho… ly… s**t.

HTC 10 Review
If we're really being honest, smartphones had become pretty boring for a while. They all looked the same and were all replaced each year by newer models with slightly better specs and minor feature upgrades. But then something started to happen. Growth slowed for some of the industry's top players and completely vanished for others, thanks in part to a lack of innovation and increased pressure from low-cost options out of China. Phone makers are seriously turning up the heat in 2016 as a result, and the fresh new HTC 10 is the latest new offering that looks to reignite consumers' love affair with smartphones.

HTC 10 Review: A Last Grasp at Greatness

When giants fall, they fall spectacularly, and HTC’s descent over the last few years has been remarkable to watch. After creating a trendsetting phone in 2013, it imploded just two years later with sluggish and poorly-reviewed follow-ups. Their newest phone, the HTC 10, is about crawling back from obscurity. While remnants of its old design clings to the familiar shiny and chrome exterior, almost everything inside this phone is reinvention: from the speakers to the software to the camera.
