Leaked Verizon document details Android updates

Verizon Android update schedule leaked

A Reddit user by the name of DroidTosser claims to have the inside scoop on Verizon’s Android update schedule, and has posted the images to back their story up. According the photos, the HTC Rezound is slated receive an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on May 9th, followed by the DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX on May 21st. Verizon’s first Honeycomb tablet, the Motorola XOOM is currently awaiting “technical approval” and will be updated directly by Google. The DROID Bionic, HTC Thunderbolt, LG Revolution, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and Sony Xperia Play are all in testing, however the updates aren’t labeled as Ice Cream Sandwich builds and may just refer to bug fixes. Additional images can be found after the break.

HTC Rezound and LG Spectrum now just $99.99 from Verizon

HTC Rezound 4G LTE smartphone

If you’re a Verizon Wireless customer or looking to become one, the carrier is offering two of its latest 4G LTE handsets, the LG Spectrum and HTC Rezound, for $99.99 each with a two-year agreement. Both handsets run a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and impressive qHD displays. When BGR reviewed the Rezound last November, we were impressed with the overall performance of the device and with the gorgeous high definition display in particular. It was recommended over Motorola’s DROID RAZR and Samsung’s Galaxy S II, although due to its lack of Ice Cream Sandwich it fell short compared to Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus. Subscribers will have until Monday, February 28th to take advantage of Verizon’s deals on the Rezound and Spectrum, which are only available online.

HTC offers bootloader unlocking option for all recent Android phones

Last May, HTC’s chief executive officer Peter Chou responded to customer feedback and announced that the company would no longer be locking the bootloaders on its devices. HTC later introduced the web-based HTCDev unlocking tool, giving users a simple and safe way to unlock their devices. The solution was not perfect though, and phones such as the HTC Vivid and HTC Rezound were released with locked bootloaders and users had no method to unlock them. HTC has made good on its promise once again, however, and the company’s developer site has now been updated with the following message:

All HTC Android devices launched after September 2011 are unlockable. The website will be updated accordingly to reflect this in the coming weeks. We continue to work on models launched prior to September 2011, please check back often for the status of older devices.

Anyone interested in customizing their HTC device should visit the source link after the break.

HTC Rezound hands-on (again)

HTC Rezound 4G LTE smartphone

We just received our HTC Rezound review unit, and although we spent a few moments with the device at HTC’s announcement in New York City, we have some more thoughts on the 4G LTE smartphone after using it for the morning. For starters, while the phone isn’t nearly as thin as other 4G LTE devices like the Motorola DROID RAZR or Samsung Galaxy Nexus, it’s a completely different animal than the HTC Thunderbolt. It fits nicely in your hand, and it feels good to use and hold. The 4.3-inch 720p HD display is absolutely beautiful. In fact, it’s probably the best display on any mobile device we’ve ever seen besides the iPhone’s Retina Display. It’s so good that there are elements in HTC’s Sense interface that aren’t high quality enough for the display, but we’ll touch on that more in our review. The included Beats headphones are decent and offer very good audio reproduction, and the HTC Rezound has taken everything we’ve thrown at it and powered through without a hiccup — this device is fast. We have hands-on photos in the gallery below, so make sure to check those out while we work on our full review.

HTC Rezound hands-on

We just spent a couple minutes with HTC’s latest and greatest, the HTC Rezound for Verizon Wireless complete with Beats audio, and it’s surely positioned as an iconic media device. It’s reasonably thin, packs 4G LTE, a super high resolution 720p display which looks amazing, and that’s not mentioning the 8-megapixel camera with improved optics and low-light performance. And then, of course, there’s Beats audio processing that will work with the included Beats headphones or ones you might already own. All in all, Verizon’s lineup for the holidays is incredible, and the HTC Rezound will surely be music to a media-centric person’s ears. Check out all of the photos in our gallery!

BGR-IMG_3021
3:57PM:You'll find it takes some design cues from the DROID Incredible line. When you look inside the product, and you take the back cover off, the design flows throughout the entire product.
BGR-IMG_3022
3:58PM:Translucent plastic to see inside the phone and see the tech. It's packed with the top tech you can pack into a phone at this point. 4G LTE, 1GB RAM, 1.5Ghz dual-core processor, latest HTC Sense.

4:00PM:What are we doing? First the HTC Rezound will sport HTC's first 720p HD display
BGR-IMG_3027
4:01PM:How is the camera? The camera is an area HTC is very proud of.. it's no secret that just a few years ago HTC's camera quality wasn't very good. We'd hear our customers and we took action, we invested significantly to be a leader here.
BGR-IMG_3028
4:02PM:Action burst, instant capture, panorama, ability to add effects to your videos. All in realtime.
BGR-IMG_3030
4:03PM:Another problem we have aimed to solve with the Rezound is one we all experience, you're out in the evening, and something brilliant happens and you pull your phone out to take a picture and you don't have enough light. We set out to insure the Rezound wasn't just a worthy camera, but the best camera. We have a f/2.2 and low-light sensors to ensure the best picture quality.
BGR-IMG_3031
4:03PM:It also will allow you to record video in 1080p. Very high quality camera. Another trend we see, people want to play and have fun. They want to edit their pictures, add effects, they are having fun. We integrated effects.
BGR-IMG_3032
BGR-IMG_3033
4:04PM:Another feature that's amazing is slow motion, this is a feature that was only relegated to the highest end video cameras, now they are in our customer's pockets
BGR-IMG_3034

BGR-IMG_3035

BGR-IMG_3039
BGR-IMG_3040
4:07PM:We're fortunate to have a great partner in Verizon Wireless, VP of Marketing Jeff Dietel is on stage now talking about their partnership. From the millions of DROID Incredibles that have been sold to the HTC Thunderbolt, there is no better network this device can run on than Verizon's 4G LTE network.
4:08PM:This is a product we're very excited about. There's things you can only do with 4G LTE that you can't do with any other network out there.
BGR-IMG_3041
BGR-IMG_3042
4:09PM:On November 14th, for 9.99 the HTC Rezound will be available in Verizon Wireless and partner stores like Best Buy nationally.
4:10PM:We're fortunate to have strong Holiday partners, we're happy to partner with Best Buy Mobile, and Best Buy Mobile head of merchandising is on stage now.
BGR-IMG_3046
BGR-IMG_3047
4:11PM:A few reasons why Best Buy is here today, Verizon has been a key and strategic partner for nearly 10 years. Also our relationship with Beats, about 4 years ago we strategized how we would launch this new product line and brand, we've continued to innovate with them. HTC, who has seemingly done nothing in the last 4 years in the United States but launch really innovative and successful products that we're excited to sell on a daily basis. That really lends itself to how successful this will be at Best Buy.
BGR-IMG_3048
4:12PM:Our employees and customers expect us to be at the forefront of technology, so we're excited to launch this later this month.
BGR-IMG_3049
4:13PM:We're wrapping up here, again, it's 9 with Beats headphones, and it's available on November 14th. It's hands on time...
