Grand Central Apple Store bonus: Free Wifi

As a Grand Central commuter, Late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon articulates my feelings on two great things coming together.

But here’s an awesome bonus that offsets the added foot-traffic that stands between me and my train: Free speedy Wifi which stretches throughout the main concourse.  It is fast and it goes way beyond the store (even in some trains!).  I wonder what was required by its contract with the MTA and which is Apple just being cool.

Apple’s Jam-Packed Grand Central Store (Video)

Apple Grand staircase

Apple finally opened up its biggest store yet in Grand Central Terminal today. Since I was passing through, I decided to take a quick walkthrough with my iPhone. The results are the two videos and other images below.

The store covers two balconies which wrap around a corner of Grand Central, with different products laid down on tables and taking up space in grottos towards the back of the balconies. There are a couple interior rooms you can go through as well, and you see the terminal’s huge chandeliers hanging out the window.

It was jam-packed on opening day, filled mostly with gawkers. But I have a feeling this will become one of Apple’s highest-grossing stores just because of how many people go through Grand Central every day. You can get a feeling for the space by watching my jerky-cam videos below.

A Blubbering Mass of Apple Idiots Are Suffocating Grand Central [Video]

I'm not judging these people (I'm totally judging these people), but HOLY CRAP ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS. Grand Central Terminal, as pretty and regal as it may look, is not where you want to be on Friday. Stay away! And yet this. More »

Apple’s massive Grand Central retail store draws big crowds ahead of 10am grand opening

An incredible new Apple store inside New York City’s landmark Grand Central Terminal – one of Apple’s largest stores in the world - is set to open this morning at 10am and already hundreds have queued up. The Fortune’s Philip Elmer-DeWitt snapped up the above shot showing staffers on the balconies above Grand Central Terminal and hundreds of fans stretching all the way down one track and part-way back.

The company will treat avid fans to cool perks, such as 4,000 black shirts with “Apple Store, Grand Central” spelled out in lettering, resembling a train arrival board. The Mac maker also posted the below press shot on its PR site. A dedicated page for the 23,000-square-foot store on Apple’s web site reveals the store work hours Monday through Friday from 7am to 9pm, 10am to 7pm on Saturdays and on Sundays from 11am to 6pm. Here’s a glimpse of the excitement.

The store’s extended holiday hours plus another video are right after the break. Our own Seth Weintraub is on hand so stay tuned for more updates, coming soon.

Here’s a two-minute clip taken in the Grand Central Terminal’s Eastern Passageway.

Look at this sneak peek of Apple's newest monumental store, located in the hall of New York City's Grand Central Terminal. From this angle, it doesn't look very special. It's like someone just set up some tables around. More »

How Apple’s Grand Central Station Store Is Screwing New York [Apple]

The Grand Central Apple store isn't even open yet and it's already becoming a massive headache for New York. First was its garish video facade. Now comes word that Apple's lease on the space is jobbing the city's transit department out of a bunch of revenue. More »

Grand Central Apple Store temporary frontage revealed (video)

The wraps are coming off of the Grand Central Apple store frontage to reveal a ticker sign according to our morning commuter tipster.   The screens move like flipping letters of the old Grand Central timetables.  The design is reminiscent of Apple’s Green Monster Facade at the Boston Store.

A construction worker on the scene said that the store wasn’t going to be opening any time soon, reiterating a comment from yesterday.  Apple had originally hoped to have the store open for the Black Friday shopping rush, but now rumors are floating around of Friday, December 9th.

Another angle and more signage snaps below – including video.  Thanks Michael Ortega from Stamford, CT and others!
