Google will reimburse you for the Pixel 2 if you overpaid at its pop-up store

Pixel 2 Price

Google launched the first-gen Pixel last year, killing the Nexus family in the process, in a bid to reinvent its smartphones and focus on premium products. A year later, the Pixel 2 models are still high-end Android handsets running the latest version of Android and selling for iPhone-like prices.

For some inexplicable reason, Google started selling the phones on Thursday at pop-up stores for an extra $30 on top of the sticker price. That’s simply unacceptable for consumers, but Google will fix it.

Google investigates the Oreo update that killed text messages on some Pixels

Google Pixel Text Messages

Google’s Pixel and Nexus phones are the only Android devices that currently run Android 8.0 Oreo. As exciting as that might be for Android users looking to use Google’s most recent Android release, some of them have been experiencing a strange text messaging issue.

Google is apparently aware of the issue and is working on a fix.

Google’s AlphaGo AI is now teaching itself how to be smarter than humans

alphago zero

AlphaGo, the board-game-playing AI built by Google's DeepMind subsidiary, just got a huge update, making it smarter — and potentially creepier — than ever before. In a paper published in Nature, the company reveals that the newest version of the AI, called AlphaGo Zero, requires no human training in order to make itself better, and it's now so good that it can demolish even the past versions of itself.

The company approached AlphaGo Zero development much differently than that of its predecessors. Rather than making the AI smarter based on known, human-developed strategies, the team instead pitted the software against itself, with no prior advanced training. As the AI beat itself over and over, it continually updated its own knowledge of the game, it got better and better.

The Pixel 2 has a secret navigation button that Google never told us about

Pixel 2 Features

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are shipping to buyers who preordered them online, and the first reviews of Google’s 2017 flagship phones are already in. However, not all the Pixel 2 secrets were shared with the public, and early users have already discovered a neat hidden feature you might enjoy.

For some reason, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL pack a hidden button that will activate menus on the phone. That’s a great throwback feature to the way Android’s navigation bar used to work. Strangely, Google never mentioned it during the phone’s unveiling.

The Pixel 2 is hiding a secret chip that doesn’t do a single thing right now

Pixel 2 Specs

Google made a big deal about the Pixel 2 phones a few weeks ago, but it forgot to unveil a feature that’s not available on any other device, including Apple’s recent iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

It’s unclear why Google kept its new "Pixel Visual Core" a secret until Tuesday. Maybe Google was afraid Pixel 2 teardowns would discover the custom chip Google built for the sole purpose of enhancing the phone’s camera. Or maybe Google just didn't want to field questions when people found out that the chip currently doesn’t work.

Of course Alphabet is working on a drone-powered burrito delivery service

drone delivery

Everyone gets cravings for tasty, tasty Mexican food every once in a while (or every few days, if you're me), but leaving your couch is just such a hassle these days. I mean, you can order caskets on Amazon Prime and have them delivered to your door, so leaving the house for something as trivial as food is just plain absurd, right? Alphabet feels the same way, so they're launching a pilot program with a popular Mexican food chain in Australia to test the feasibility of delivering burritos via drone.

The chain, Guzman y Gomez (or GYG for short), was approached by the Project Wing team, which is part of X (formerly Google X), and resides under the larger Alphabet umbrella. The Project Wing group proposed a food delivery service using the group's own drones, and GYG jumped at the opportunity.

Google Calendar has been completely redesigned and it’s so much better

Google Calendar new design

Google has pushed a long-overdue redesign to Google Calendar. It's live on the web version right now, and it's everything I've ever dreamed of while clicking my way through a schedule.

The new design features much larger date icons, new colors, a flat card design in line with Google's overarching design philosophy, and a much cleaner overall aesthetic. Basically, it doesn't look like the Palm Pilot calendar circa 2002 any more.

Let’s talk about that Pixel 2 contrast color button though

The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have one of the best features introduced on a smartphone in recent memory: That button. Admittedly, it’s just a superficial design decision, but it’s actually one of the most interesting, and most bold design decisions make in smartphones by a major consumer hardware company in a long time. Maybe that’s a depressing commentary on the state of… Read More
