That Hitchhiking Robot That Americans Beat Up Will Live Forever in a Canadian Museum

Summer 2015 marked the failed American odyssey of hitchBOT, the hitchhiking humanoid built for motorists to tote from Salem, Massachusetts, to San Francisco. It got as far as Philly before being torn limb from limb. But in Canada, where people are infinitely friendlier toward roadside robots, the original hitchBOT—which did manage to thumb it cross-country—will be enshrined in a national museum.

A Canadian Cell Carrier Is Giving Syrian Refugees Free Cell Phones

Canada’s new Liberal government is committed to bringing 10,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of the year (not long left!). Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for a “whole of Canada effort” to integrate “10,000 new Canadians”, and one cell carrier is actually responding.

Apple Pay is now available in Canada with American Express, UK Apple Pay adds Tesco Bank and TSB

Screen Shot 2015-11-17 at 08.15.33

As expected, Apple Pay is now available in Canada. You can use use eligible American Express bank cards to make mobile payments at a whole host of retailers that support the NFC technology across Canada. Apple Pay retailer mobile payments works with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. Some had suggested that Apple may need to push out an iOS software update but iOS 9.2 remains in beta — this all works from within the Wallet setup on iOS 9.1.

For the UK, Apple has also brought Tesco Bank and TSB onboard … expanding Apple Pay to even more people in the country.

To add cards in Apple Pay, open Wallet app and click on the ‘Add Debit/Credit Card’ option. Unlike the launch in US and UK, which supported many regional banks, the Canadian Apple Pay launch is limited to just American Express cards. For Canada users, you may have to change your region to US in Settings for the Add Credit / Debit Card option to appear. It is still rolling out ahead of an ‘official’ launch later today so the region change is an interim step.

It’s not known if Apple intends to continue expansion into other Canadian banks. Apple also has announced a similar deal in Australia: using American Express as the conduit to launch Apple Pay there. Apple Pay with American Express is coming to Spain, Singapore and Hong Kong in 2016.

For Canada, Apple Pay is supported a wide variety of big retailers like McDonald’s, Walmart and of course Apple Stores. Look for the normal contactless logo in store to see if Apple Pay is supported.

On the UK front, Tesco Bank and TSB have today launched Apple Pay support. For Tesco, you can use any  MasterCard Tesco Bank card. Rather amusingly, the distribution of NFC in Tesco retail supermarkets is lacking so there’s a good chance you won’t be able to use Apple Pay on your Tesco bank card in Tesco itself. TSB’s Apple Pay launch includes some 5% cashback promotions so check out their website for full details.

New Ministries Suggest Canada’s Government is About to Get Serious About Science

Canada’s new Liberal government was sworn in yesterday, and if its first moves were of any indication, science—woefully neglected under the previous Conservative government—will become a serious priority. The new cabinet features not one but two science ministers, and a renamed environment office with the words “climate change” right in the title.

Satellite Images Reveal a Massive 60 Million-Ton Avalanche in Canada

Early last week, around 45 megatons of ice and rock plunged down the southeast flank of Mount Steele in Canada’s Yukon Territory. The avalanche, which occurred in a remote and unpopulated area, was so large that it was initially detected by earthquake seismometers.

Apple Maps gains Amtrak routes + Boston transit, partners with Yellow Pages in Canada for business data

Apple Maps Transit Amtrak

Apple delivered a major upgrade to Maps in iOS 9, OS X El Capitan, and watchOS 2 with the addition of transit directions in select cities, and now its rolling out additional cities and transportation methods to bolster that feature. In addition to expanding transit, Apple has found a new partner in Canada to provide rich local business data for use in Maps.

Transit in Apple Maps already supported buses, ferries, subways, and trains in supported cities including San Francisco, New York City, and Washington, DC, and today users noticed Amtrak train routes between major Northeastern cities in the United States (via MacRumors). Not all Amtrak routes are present within Apple Maps as routes for cities that currently support Apple’s transit feature are presented but the new data does add to the feature.

Continuing transit’s rollout, The Boston Globe reports that Apple Maps today turned on support for the new feature for customers in the area. Transit in Boston supports viewing routes for the city’s buses, commuter rail, subways, and trolleys within Apple Maps.

Before Apple officially unveiled its transit feature in Maps, 9to5Mac first reported that Boston would be absent at launch but on Apple’s list to target next. The rollout comes just as Apple pulls the plug on HopStop, which was a transit service app that provided data in Boston acquired by Apple in 2013.

Sydney, Australia is also set to gain transit in Apple Maps this moth according to Apple’s site, joining Baltimore, Berlin, Chicago, China, London, Mexico City, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto, and now Boston.

Finally, Apple Maps in Canada is set to improve with local business data. As iPhone in Canada points out, Apple has partnered with Yellow Pages in Canada to provide local business information like hours, ratings, website, and contact information within Maps. Apple has similarly partnered with Yellow Pages in other regions including Turkey for sourcing local business data for Maps.
