AMD’s taking on Intel with a $549 8-core Threadripper

AMD Threadripper 1900X price, release date vs Core i7

AMD has released the Ryzen Threadripper 1900X, a "budget" way for gamers to get an absurdly powerful 8-core processor without spending over $1,000 on a flagship model. It's a big day for AMD, which has been struggling to compete with Intel for the last few years.

With the launch of a mid-range processor that can offer more performance per dollar than Intel's CPUs, AMD is officially back in the game.

Intel’s new Core i9 sounds like a monster

Intel Core i9 specs leak

It's been a long time since Intel came out with a new line of CPUs. Although the company updates its processor lineup every year like clockwork, the product categories remain the same: Core i3 for budget PCs, Core i5 for most people, and Core i7 for those mystical "power users." But starting this year, the dial goes up to 9.

A previous rumor had suggested that Intel will be debuting a Core i9 lineup this month. Now a new leaked specs sheet has details: there will be multiple Core i9 models, topping out with a disturbingly powerful 18-core version.

How AMD plans to beat Intel and Nvidia in 2017

amd ryzen

There's really no denying that AMD has had a pretty rough go of it the past few years. The company's two-headed battle against Intel on the CPU front and Nvidia on the GPU side has resulted in a lack of meaningful updates for either, and a general feeling of indifference among many AMD faithful. But 2017 could change all of that, and even though Nvidia and Intel have both built even more impressive leads over their competitor than they already had, AMD isn't throwing in the towel just yet.

AMD’s Ryzen threatens to destroy Intel’s gaming supremacy

amd zen vs intel

Intel's Core processors have long been the overwhelming favorite amongst PC gamers when compared to AMD's alternatives. AMD's chips have impressive specs of their own, and have been shown to outperform Intel's hardware under certain circumstances, but unlocked i7 processors from Intel are still the go-to for overclockers and enthusiasts. AMD would love to change that, and it's going to try with the new Ryzen chip architecture. Some recently released benchmarks show that AMD is at least on the right track.

AMD’s Graphics Card for VR Is Stupid Powerful and Horribly Expensive

The specs needed to just power a VR headset are painfully high, so it stands to reason that the hardware used by developers to make those games will need to be something special. That’s what AMD is trying to deliver with its new Radeon Pro Duo, unveiled at the Game Developer’s Conference today.
