New Nintendo 3DS Review: A Terrible Name for a Worthy Successor

Portable gaming is Nintendo's wheelhouse: it pioneered the category with the Game Boy, reinvented it with the Nintendo DS, and uses its current generation, the Nintendo 3DS, to help pay the bills in the wake of underwhelming Wii U sales. Starting today, you can buy the company's latest gaming handheld: The New Nintendo 3DS. It's better than it sounds.

Nintendo just announced a new console, but not the one you were expecting

New Nintendo 3DS Release Date

It's been a trying year for Nintendo as the Wii U struggles to compete with the PS4 and Xbox One, but with the holiday season approaching, the company has a few tricks up its sleeve to entice fans. Unfortunately, those plans do not include an upgraded home console on par with the next-gen system from Microsoft and Sony.

Forget Wii U: Nintendo sold more than 16 million 3DS games in 2013

Nintendo 3DS Game Sales 2013
It remains to be seen how well the Wii U sold in its first full year on the market, but at least one Nintendo console flourished in 2013. According to a recent press release, Nintendo sold more than 16 million physical and digital 3DS games last year, a 45% increase in year-over-year sales. The 3DS family (which includes the 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS) has also surpassed more than 11.5 million sales in the U.S. There were plenty of great games for the portable console released in 2013, including the new Pokemon titles and the system seller that is The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Another long-awaited sequel, Yoshi's New Island, is set to lead the charge in 2014 as Nintendo tries to top its record once again. The full press release can be found below.

These are the 5 best Wii U and 3DS games so far

Some consumers didn't even understand what the Wii U was, and it's hard to blame them. Things still aren't looking any better for the king of the last generation, especially now that Microsoft and Sony have both re-entered the market with hardware that blows away anything the Wii U has to offer. The one thing the Wii U does have over the PS4 and Xbox One this holiday season is a year long head start, which means a much wider — and better — selection of games to purchase.
