No smartphone needs 8GB of RAM, especially not a Nokia

Nokia 9 Specs: 8GB of RAM

How much RAM is too much on an Android phone? That’s a question smartphone makers are yet to answer, as they keep pushing the envelope in the memory department. Most flagship handsets ship with 4GB of RAM and more memory should help with app performance. But customers in certain markets like China want even more RAM than that. That’s why you get OnePlus handsets with 6GB of RAM or why Samsung’s Galaxy S8 for Asia comes in a 6GB RAM flavor. A new report says that Nokia’s flagship phone might ship with as much as 8GB of RAM on board, or the amount of memory you’d find on a decent-to-pro laptop.

Andy Rubin’s mysterious new Android phone will do something your iPhone can’t

Andy Rubin Essential Android Phone Features

There are several interesting Android devices in the works, and one of them is supposed to launch real soon. No, it’s not the OnePlus 5, although that one also qualifies. It’s Andy Rubin’s Essential, a flagship device that should compete directly against the iPhone 8, the Galaxy S8, and every other high-end Android handset you can think of. We don’t know many things about the Essential phone right now, other than it’s supposed to have an edge-to-edge screen and offer a feature unseen on the iPhone so far.

We’re months away from launch, but you can already buy an iPhone 8 case

iPhone 8 vs iPhone 7

We still don't even know for sure what calendar year the iPhone 8 is going to launch in, but China's accessory industry waits for no man. Alibaba, China's less scrupulous version of Amazon, already has iPhone 8 cases listed for sale, so a Japanese iPhone blog decided to take one for a spin.

The first iPhone 8 release date rumor is here, and it’s absolutely absurd

iPhone 8 Release Date

Reminder: leaking details about Apple's plans for upcoming devices is tricky business, especially when your "sources" have no real inside track at Apple. A new crop of "leakers" is starting to emerge, and they tend to source their information from various forums and other sites where Foxconn factory workers are thought to lurk. Of course, most people don't bother to vet these "sources" at all, and they simply post as much as they can from these people. Some of these "sources" really do work in Foxconn factories, or in factories run by other Apple suppliers, and they do sometimes share real information and photos. Other times, the "sources" are just random people who make things up because they're bored and they have nothing better to do.

On Thursday, we have a new "leak" that gives us a perfect example of what happens when people just blindly post info shared by these "sources."

Leak: Can the iPhone 8 compete with a Galaxy Note 8 that looks like this?

Galaxy Note 8 Phone Specs

Samsung is working hard to ensure that its upcoming new Galaxy Note 8 is the hottest new smartphone of 2017, but only figuratively this time. The Galaxy Note 7 was nothing short of a total disaster, which is obviously a shame since reviewers and consumers alike absolutely loved the phone until it started exploding in people's hands. In 2017, Samsung moved toward a fresh and exciting new design with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The phones' new Infinity Displays occupy an impressive 83% of their front sides, creating a more immersive experience than we've ever seen before on a widely available flagship smartphone.

With the Galaxy Note 8, Samsung is rumored to be pushing its sleek new "all-screen" design even further, and now a new leak points to what may end up being the most stunning smartphone the world has ever seen.

T-Mobile is about to make its most exciting new service free for all subscribers

T-Mobile Digits Price

It might’ve taken a little longer than the company had hoped, but T-Mobile is finally ready to unleash its new "Digits" product. First teased all the way back in October 2015 when a T-Mobile executive fired shots at AT&T's just-announced NumberSync, T-Mobile eventually introduced Digits as a beta this past December. That beta has now hosted tens of thousands of participants according to Evan Feldman, T-Mobile's director of product marketing, and the company is ready to make it available more widely.

In fact, T-Mobile is announcing on Thursday that Digits will be made available to everyone beginning May 31st, and every single subscriber will have his or her phone number transformed into a Digits number for free.

Samsung insists your Galaxy S8’s iris scanner can’t be hacked in real life

Galaxy S8 Iris Scanner Hack Real Life

Security researchers showed that the Galaxy S8’s iris scanner can be easily bypassed with the right tools. After the video had come out, Samsung issued a first response, reassuring customers that it’s aware of the issue, and that it’ll further study the matter. Since then, the company made other official comments on the hack, saying that it’s unlikely for it to work in real life use.

New iPhone 8 schematic features the iPhone design we want

iPhone 8 Rumors Schematic Leak

We’re used to seeing plenty of new iPhone leaks at this time of year, and the same goes for the iPhone 8. The device that will mark Apple’s tenth iPhone anniversary is supposed to be something entirely new in terms of design and features, and some reports claim Apple will have to delay the phone's launch due to the sophistication of some of its components. Conflicting reports say that some suppliers are on track with their components that will be found in the next iPhone, and Apple is already preparing to start mass production of its 2017 iPhones. That would explain this new, highly detailed iPhone 8 schematic.
