Opinion: iPhone 8 sales probably are low, as iPhone X sales are going to be huge

The $64,000 question of the moment seems to be: How well (or badly) is the iPhone 8 selling?

We’ve been hearing conflicting answers. A KGI report stated that the iPhone 8 Plus, at least, was selling better than expected. Foxconn financials also seemed to support that idea.

But there have been more negative reports than positive ones. AT&T said that it had seen almost 1M fewer upgrades this year. A carrier store survey suggested more people were buying last year’s iPhone 7 than the iPhone 8. A major Canadian carrier said iPhone 8 sales have been anemic. And a supply chain source claims that Apple has ordered its iPhone 8 suppliers to cut production in half.

I tend to side with those who think the iPhone 8 is selling poorly. But far from considering that bad news, I think it’s a clear indication that iPhone X sales are going to be far better than expected …

Canada’s largest mobile network says iPhone 8 sales ‘anemic,’ Verizon says as expected

The CEO of Rogers Communication, Canada’s largest mobile network, has described iPhone 8 sales as ‘anemic,’ while Verizon’s CFO took the view that what we’re seeing is probably nothing to worry about.

An analyst has pitched in on the side of Verizon, suggesting that the 2.37% fall in AAPL’s share price yesterday was a knee-jerk response which is unlikely to be justified …

App developer who’s been using Animoji name since 2014 sues Apple for trademark infringement

An iOS app developer who’s been using the name ‘Animoji’ since 2014, and registered it as a U.S. trademark the same year, is suing Apple for trademark infringement. Apple last month announced Animoji as a headline feature of the iPhone X.

He claims that Apple was aware of his trademark both because his app has been in the iOS app store since 2014 and, he alleges, because the company tried to buy the name …

KGI: About 3 million iPhone X units will be available for launch, production improving in November

A morning report from KGI reiterates production issues we’ve been hearing about the iPhone X, indicating that only 2-3 million units will be shipped for sale before the launch on November 3rd (preorders open a week from today).

KGI points to supply shortages for several components including circuit boards for the iPhone X antenna and wide angle camera, and the depth-sensing Infrared dot projector.

Adobe’s Project Scribbler uses AI to colorize any black and white photo in seconds

Adobe’s research team previewed emerging technology today at Adobe MAX 2017 that may one day make the tedious, but increasingly popular work of colorizing black and white photos obsolete. Project Scribbler is a new initiative powered by Adobe Sensei that can interpret any black and white sketch or photo and accurately apply realistic coloring to it.

Ted Cruz & Patrick Leahy slam Tim Cook for removing VPN apps from Chinese App Store

Earlier this year, Apple was forced to remove several VPN apps from the App Store in China due to regulatory reasons. At the time, Tim Cook explained that he would rather not remove them, but was forced to comply.
