Study shows robots are better at slicing humans open than humans are

robot surgery

Human surgeons are some of the most skilled, precise individuals on the planet, but no amount of training and experience can make them better at slicing human flesh than robots already are. A new study aimed at comparing the steady hand of a human surgeon against the cold precision of the Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot (STAR) revealed just how much better a bot really is, and what that means for patients going under its knife.

The research pitted the surgical bot, which is still in active development, against a human surgeons operating on a human analog — in this particular case, it was pig tissue including muscle, fat, and of course skin. The cuts made by both the human doctors and the STAR were judged based on how precise their cuts were as well as how much damage was done to the flesh surrounding the incision. The result? Well, you can probably guess...

‘The New Mutants’ puts a horror spin on the X-Men in first trailer

The New Mutants trailer

While the X-Men movies have cycled through casts and story lines for nearly two decades now, the genre has always been action. In The New Mutants, director Josh Boone and 20th Century Fox are putting a new spin on the franchise by shifting to horror. And based on the first trailer, it looks unlike anything else in the Marvel canon.

Set in a secret facility, The New Mutants follows five young mutants who are being held against their will as they learn about their abilities. They will have to work together to stand a fighting chance of escaping. The film stars Anya-Taylor Joy as Magik, Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Mirage and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes, a doctor who can generate a force field.

People are so pumped for ‘Super Mario Odyssey’ that they’re speedrunning the in-store demo

Super Mario Odyssey demo speedrun

We're two weeks away from the release of Super Mario Odyssey on the Switch, but for many Nintendo fans, the wait has become unbearable. Sadly, there's no demo available on the Switch eShop to help tide us all over, but across the country, retailers have set up Super Mario Odyssey demo stations, featuring a single level from the game.

Although the demo can be completed, it has a 10-minute timer so that the next person in line won't be waiting forever to get a turn. But some gamers see the timer as a challenge, which has given rise to a funny, fantastic phenomenon: Super Mario Odyssey demo speedruns. At the time of writing, the current world record appears to be 5:28.

Pretend you have a Pixel 2 by downloading the new Pixel 2 launcher

Google Pixel 2 release date, official launcher download

You don't have a Pixel 2 right now, because the release date isn't until next Thursday, October 19th. But with 30 seconds of work and an Android phone, you can pretend like you've got Google's newest flagship, thanks to the release of the Pixel 2 default launcher.

The app, which you can download from an unofficial mirror here, is the new default launcher for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The biggest change is a Google Search bar at the bottom of the screen, and a new Glance widget. Otherwise, it's virtually identical to the old Pixel launcher. Either way, it's almost certainly better than whatever you're running right now.

Genetically-modified apples that don’t go brown are headed to supermarkets next month

arctic apples

There are few things as satisfying as biting into a nice, crisp apple, but the beloved fruit has always had one big problem: it tends to go brown just minutes after its skin is pierced, giving apple slices a very short window of appeal. Science has finally come up with a solution, and it's going to start landing in grocery stores and markets early next month.

It's called the Arctic apple, and it's the result of some very clever genetic engineering that, according to the company, "silences" the enzyme that causes regular old nature-made apples to brown. The pitch to consumers is a piece of fruit that keeps its aesthetic appeal much longer after being sliced, leading to less waste and potentially even cost savings.

iPhone X, Galaxy Note 8, or Pixel 2: Which phone wins the bezel wars?

iPhone X vs. Pixel 2 XL vs. Galaxy Note 8

Ever since the original iPhone changed the game in the mobile business, handset makers have tried to offer buyers bigger smartphones, larger screens, and tinier bezels.

Thus, the battle of the bezels isn’t new, and some smartphone makers used the screen-to-body ratio as a selling point for a few years now. But 2017 will be remembered as the year of the all-screen smartphone design.

So who’s got the smallest, best-looking bezels of them all?
