Scientists create world’s first mutant ants with gene editing technology

It may sound like a script for a science fiction movie, but scientists have created the world’s first mutant ants.

Two independent research teams have harnessed the gene editing technology CRISPR to genetically alter the ants. In one study, researchers at Rockefeller University modified a gene essential for sensing the pheromones that ants use to communicate. Experts say that the resulting deficiencies in the ants’ social behaviors and their ability to survive in a colony, sheds light on social evolution.

Hubble snaps gorgeous photo of a pint-sized galaxy

space news

Size is entirely relative, so to say that the galaxy named NGC 5949 is "small" is a bit of a joke, especially once you've gotten an eyeful of this truly stunning snapshot taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The swirling mass of gas, stars, and planets is larger than anything you could really imagine, but when compared to other galaxies — including our own relatively small Milky Way — it's downright adorable.

‘Destiny 2’ PC beta: Everything Bungie changed since the console beta

Destiny 2 PC Beta

A few years ago, when Bungie rolled out the first public beta for Destiny, nobody really knew that the game was going to look like. Bungie packed the beta with a massive amount of content, including access to one of four open world areas that would be available in the retail release. For the Destiny 2 beta, the developer didn't have to prove anything -- the goal was just to make sure the game would run.

But just because the Destiny 2 console beta was a technical test doesn't mean that Bungie isn't changing content and balancing combat as well. In fact, on Thursday, Bungie community manager DeeJ took to the Bungie blog to highlight some of the changes that are being made for the upcoming PC beta.

Evolution gave this ancient beast a weird face because it kept ramming into stuff

science news

Moschops capensis was a weird looking animal. When it roamed the Earth some 260 million years ago its goofy stance and wide body would have caught your eye from a distance, and that's even before you noticed its almost comical face. Scientists have been working hard to determine why its tiny brain was protected by such a thick, flat, elongated skull, and new research seems to point to the answer: Maschops capensis really, really loved slamming its head into stuff.

New iPhone 8 renders show off a more artsy take on Apple’s next-gen smartphone

iPhone 8 Design

Over the past few weeks, we've been inundated by a seemingly endless stream of iPhone 8 mockups and dummy units. While mockups of a pre-release iPhone should typically be taken with a grain of salt, there's a lot of evidence to suggest that the dummy units we've seen thus far are indeed accurate. Not only that, but data strings found buried in Apple's HomePod firmware have essentially confirmed what the iPhone 8's new form factor is going to look like.

Review: Bragi Dash Pro is a costly standout amongst wireless earphones

Long before the AirPods hit the market, Bragi hit the ground running with their true wireless earphones on Kickstarter. Three years later the company has released an upgrade on their original Dash. The Dash Pro brings improvements to Bluetooth connectivity, microphone quality, and a new live language translation ability.

Having spent a full month using the Dash Pro over my AirPods, I’ve dissected as much as I could out of these wireless earphones. The original Dash didn’t raise praise from us before, but could the Dash Pro be Bragi’s comeback kid story?

Machine learning can tell if you’re wearing swap-meet Louie

A wise man once said “The hat mighta had a L V on the back but at the swap meet that ain’t jack,” and now researchers can ensure that the Louis Vuitton or Prada or Coach you bought is the real deal. The system, which essentially learns the difference between real and fake products over time, uses a small microscope connected to a phone. “The underlying principle of… Read More

The Minifree Libreboot T400 is free as in freedom

The Libreboot T400 doesn’t look like much. It’s basically a refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad with the traditional Lenovo/IBM pointer nubbin and a small touchpad. It’s a plain black laptop, as familiar as any luggable assigned to a cubicle warrior on the road. But, under the hood, you have a machine that fights for freedom. The T400 runs Libreboot, a free and open BIOS and the… Read More
