Science gets spooky on Halloween: 7 ghostly tweets

1477933930999
It’s Halloween, and scientific organizations are taking to Twitter with their scariest images. From spooky-looking rocks, to a ghostly octopus, to the sun taking on the appearance of a jack-o-lantern, here are some of the most haunting science images of the day. Two years ago, the Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft imaged the sun looking pumpkin-like. No candle needed.

The Mac faithful are still complaining about the MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro Features
It's been a few days since Apple unveiled its revamped MacBook Pro and the frustration surrounding Apple's alleged disregard for its core users is still palpable. Despite a thinner and lighter form factor, an improved display, moderately enhanced internals and, of course, the ballyhooed Touch Bar, there seems to be large contingent of Apple users -- primarily creatives professionals and developers -- who remain unimpressed if not downright upset.

Use this Pokemon Go catch chance calculator to see if you’ll catch that Pokemon

Pokemon Go Catch Chance Calculator
"Never give me the odds" might be one of the best quotes from The Empire Strikes Back, but it's not how most Pokemon Go players feel about catching rare and powerful Pokemon. In fact, not knowing the odds can be infuriating when a Venasaur or a Dragonite pops out of a Poke Ball for the tenth time, which is why Pokemon Go Hub has developed a calculator that will help players understand what their chances are when they attempt to catch any given Pokemon.

The first benchmarks for Apple’s new MacBook Pro are out

MacBook Pro Late 2016 Benchmarks
Apple’s new MacBook Pro is already available for sale, but only the "dumb" version — that’s the 13-inch model that lacks a Touch Bar touchscreen and only has two USB-C ports. The laptop is meant to replace the MacBook Air, which isn’t receiving any more updates. It’s also not as exciting as the 13-inch and 15-inch versions that come with a Touch Bar. That said, the first benchmarks for the laptop have emerged, proving that the MacBook Air replacement is faster than last year’s base MacBook Pro option.

The panic inside an airplane on fire is straight-up terrifying

Video Airplane Fire Evacuation
There’s little anyone can do to train for dealing with an airplane fire. You do as you’re told and hope to live to tell the tale, especially if the plane is still on the ground. But if there’s one thing we’re all “trained” to do that’s to record videos with our smartphones. And a person who experienced one such incident preserved the panic inside the cockpit for posterity with the help of his smartphone camera. One other person filmed the plane burning after the evacuation.

Narrative lifelogging gets a stay of execution as the company considers restarting production

Narrative Clip This was certainly unexpected. For any number of reasons. A day before the planned shutdown of cloud-based storage service, lifelogging startup Narrative — or, rather, a group of former employees – has snatched itself from the jaws of death. In an email sent to Narrative users, the company announced the launch of “New Narrative,” rising like the proverbial phoenix or one… Read More

Update: Apple Watch Activity app workaround for ‘rest days’ concept

Earlier this month I wrote about a sour experience I had with my Apple Watch and activity tracking. Apple’s Activity app on the iPhone recorded 499 active calories burned, just one active calorie shy of my daily goal, even though the Activity app on my Apple Watch showed my progress at just over 100%.

It was an odd (and annoying) discrepancy that prompted me to think about how Apple’s Activity app could better handle different situations like sick days and harder to track activities. I proposed a new concept of rest days, tolerance levels, and an honor system that could help avoid losing achievement streaks and motivation.

A lot of readers wrote in with similar stories and advice for correcting the data sync bug that I experienced. Now that we’re on the last day of the month (happy Halloween!), I can report that the recommendation I received from 9to5Mac readers was successful and worth passing along.
