Microsoft shows off Xbox Live on Windows 8 (video)

Yeah, we knew it was possible, but knowing and seeing are two very, very different animals. Just before closing the doors at Build 2011, Microsoft's Avi Ben-Menahem took the time to briefly showcase what would be possible with Xbox Live and Windows 8. It's obviously in a very early state, but already we're seeing signs of cross-platform multiplayer game support, and an (unsurprisingly) Metro-style universe supplanting the existing Games for Windows Live. We get the feeling that Microsoft's thinking this one through; rather than just shoehorning a gaming element in, things like "cloud saves" and dedicated Music / Video panes will be around to enjoy. Moreover, participation in the Xbox Live development program will purportedly be free, and if Ben-Menahem has his way, this will bring "everything you know and love on Xbox 360 and Xbox Live to Windows." Bold. Peek the pair of videos just after the break.

Despite the stigma, there are many people still using AOL email. Some are stuck in a technology timewarp; but not everyone is that backwards. Some notable and presumably intelligent celebrities are reportedly still using their AOL email addresses. More »

Bose Tells AirPlay to Eat It with Its SoundLink Mobile Bluetooth Speaker [Speakers]

The tiny Bose bluetooth speaker system we caught a whiff of last week went official today with a considerably less goofy name than "Chihuahua." The Soundlink Mobile, as it's actually called, is a portable Bluetooth speaker in an AirPlay world, but it looks like it might be pretty good anyway. More »

Former Samsung manager admits to leaking iPad trade secrets

A former Samsung manager has admitted in court that he leaked information about Apple’s iPad tablet to members of an expert network and a hedge fund before the device was launched. While testifying at the insider trading trial of Primary Global Research LLC executive James Fleishman, ex-Samsung manager Suk-Joo Hwang told jurors that he had been paid $38,000 to share information about Apple’s iPad before the device was announced in 2010. “One particular thing I remember vividly was that I talked about the shipment numbers of Apple, it was about iPad,” Hwang testified. “This is in December 2009, before it came out with the tablet PC, they didn’t know the name then, so I talked to them about the tablet shipment estimates in that meeting.” PGR’s Fleishman allegedly took the information he was given about Apple’s upcoming device and fed it to the firm’s hedge fund clients, a practice that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has taken a particular interest in of late. Hwang was granted immunity in exchange for his testimony.

Microsoft Shows Off Tango Video Chat App On The HTC Titan

htc-titan-mango-550

I’ve liked Windows Phone Mango since I first laid eyes on it, but the truth of the matter is that most of the features being implemented are merely catching up to competing platforms.

The Bing integration and voice-to-text capabilities are… pretty cool. But other than that, as I said, Mango is playing catch-up. The addition of a video chat app on the Mango-powered HTC Titan is yet another example of that, but it’s coming.

Despite the incredibly unfortunate name sharing situation, the Tango video chat app (unrelated to the next WP7 update codenamed Tango) is actually pretty cool, albeit a bit late to the party. In the video below, Aaron Woodman of the Windows Phone team perhaps too enthusiastically details the way video chat works on that massive 4.7-inch Titan screen (courtesy of the Windows Phone Blog). Like Apple’s FaceTime and the Tango app for Android, Tango for WP lets you enjoy the “see what I see” switcharoo between front and rear-facing cameras. Oddly enough, Google Talk has yet to get this figured out.

What’s cool is that the Tango app for Mango is cross-platform, offering support for iOS, Android, and PC. Microsoft happens to own a pretty awesome VoIP service called Skype, so this Tango app may have some pretty serious competition on the Windows platform in the future.
